Wakatobi National Park is a tiny cluster of islands in Indonesia, bookended by the Banda Sea and the Flores Sea – and what a cluster it is! Revered for its abundance of coral and marine wildlife, its name is a composite of the four islands that made up the national park: Wangiwangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko (hint: check out the first two letters of each of those words).
Take a dive into the crystal-clear waters that surround one of the best dive sites on earth and you’ll find yourself face-to-face with a spectacularly biodiverse coral reef. Home to nearly 950 different species of fish and another 750 types of coral, a colossal rainbow of life lies just beneath the surface of Wakatobi’s warm waters.
Meanwhile, perched just above the water is a smattering of homes elevated by wooden stilts. Inside you’ll find members of the Bajo tribe, living in harmony with the sea – a testament to Wakatobi’s synonymity with the water that defines it.
